Many top tech companies offer scholarships to help college-bound students achieve their dreams. While some are open to everyone, others are designed to address the lack of diversity in the tech world. A 2021 study revealed that fewer than 10% of STEM professionals in the workforce are Black. That’s where the Blacks at Microsoft Scholarship steps in—to close that gap and uplift more Black students pursuing STEM degrees.
What is the Blacks at Microsoft Scholarship?
The Blacks at Microsoft (BAM) Scholarship is backed by a passionate group of Black Microsoft employees who want to support and inspire the next generation of Black tech talent.
Each year, BAM awards:
- Five renewable scholarships worth $5,000 per year (renewable for up to four years)
- Forty-five one-time scholarships of $2,500
Winners might also be considered for internships at Microsoft—while not guaranteed, it’s a great opportunity to get your foot in the door.
Deadline: March 13
All materials, including recommendation letters, must be submitted online by this date. No documents will be accepted by mail or email.
Who Can Apply?
This scholarship is for high school seniors only, and you must meet the following criteria:
- Identify as being of African descent (African-American or an African immigrant)
- Plan to attend a four-year college or university in the U.S.
- Have a 3.0 GPA or higher
- Demonstrate financial need
Planning to start at a community college? That’s okay—as long as you plan to earn a bachelor’s degree eventually, you’re still eligible.
Your intended major should fall under one of the following areas:
- Engineering
- Computer Science
- Computer Information Systems
- Business (like Finance, Business Admin, or Marketing)
What You’ll Need to Apply
Here’s a quick checklist of what to submit:
✅ A 500-word essay (2,000 characters or less) responding to:
“Describe how you plan to engage in the technology industry in your career.”
✅ A full-color headshot
✅ An official high school transcript
✅ At least one recommendation letter (must be from a teacher or faculty member—more are welcome)
✅ Your resume, highlighting school activities, volunteer work, jobs, and any STEM-related achievements

Your resume is your chance to show who you are outside the classroom. List any jobs, internships, clubs, or volunteer work—especially those related to technology or leadership. Double-check for spelling or grammar mistakes before submitting.
